QUETTA: At least 27 people were killed and 40 others were injured in a suicide explosion at Quetta Railway Stationn, marking the latest incident of unrest in Balochistan.
Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion took place at the railway station’s booking office, which usually witnesses a significant number of people, resulting in the high death toll so far.
Quetta Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat confirmed that the explosion at Quetta Railway Station was a suicide attack. He explained that the bomber entered the station with luggage, and it is hard to stop someone who plans to carry out such an attack.
Speaking to Geo News, Shafqaat also asked people to donate blood, as there is a shortage. He confirmed that among the victims were law enforcement officers, and a banned group has taken responsibility for the attack.
The Jaffer Express was supposed to leave for Peshawar at 9 a.m., according to railway officials. Some of the injured are in critical condition, so the death toll may increase.
Senior Superintendent of Police Muhammad Baloch said the explosion appeared to be a suicide blast. It happened inside the railway station just as the train was about to depart for Peshawar.
The explosion damaged the platform roof, and the blast could be heard across the city.
Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind told Geo News that around 40 people were injured, with 10 in serious condition. He also mentioned that Balochistan’s Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti had canceled a foreign trip and was coming back to hold an emergency meeting on the situation.
When asked if there had been any specific threats before the blast, Rind said no, but he acknowledged there was a general security risk due to the ongoing law and order problems in the region.
