Nokia announced on Wednesday that it had acquired the world’s largest API hub and marketplace from the U.S. company Rapid. This acquisition aims to strengthen Nokia’s revenue streams from its 5G and 4G networks.
Like other telecommunications equipment manufacturers, Nokia has been exploring ways to capitalize on its 5G technology and diversify its business, especially as investment opportunities grow with advancements in artificial intelligence.
Under the terms of the deal, Nokia will gain control of Rapid’s technology and R&D division, enabling its customers to integrate networks, manage API usage, and collaborate with the platform’s developer community. APIs, or application programming interfaces, are essential code components that enable standardized communication and data exchange between software systems.
The integration of APIs in advanced 5G networks allows for quicker, more secure, and precise access to data, such as user location and connectivity status. Nokia, however, did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction.
About Nokia
Nokia, a Finnish multinational telecommunications, IT, and consumer electronics giant, was founded in 1865 as a paper mill. Over time, the company expanded into rubber products, cables, and eventually electronics. In the 1980s, Nokia ventured into telecommunications, quickly gaining prominence with its mobile phones, including models like the Nokia 3310 and 1100, which led the global market in the 1990s and early 2000s. Known for their innovative design, durability, and user-friendly interface, these phones made Nokia a household name.
However, Nokia’s dominance waned with the rise of smartphones, especially due to competition from Apple’s iPhone and Android devices, which led to a significant decline in market share.
In recent years, Nokia has refocused as a major provider of network infrastructure, software, and services. After selling its mobile division to Microsoft in 2014, the company shifted its focus to 5G technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital health. Today, Nokia remains a key player in telecommunications, collaborating with operators and enterprises to develop and maintain high-performance networks. The Nokia brand continues to evoke a strong sense of innovation, reliability, and Finnish design excellence.
