The official title for Mission: Impossible 8 is now Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, instead of being the “Part Two” to Dead Reckoning, as originally planned. The film is set to be released on May 23, 2025, after multiple delays due to the pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike.
Tom Cruise revealed the new title(Mission Impossible 8 ‘The Final Reckoning’) and a poster on Monday, along with the caption “Every choice has led to this.”
In the action-packed trailer, Cruise is seen scuba diving to explore a sunken submarine, flying and falling from a biplane, and, of course, doing plenty of running. Angela Bassett also returns as CIA Director Erika Sloane, a role she first played in Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
The trailer hints that The Final Reckoning could be the end of the road for Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt. The film also plays on nostalgia, including scenes from the original 1996 Mission: Impossible movie directed by Brian De Palma.
Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed every Mission: Impossible film since Rogue Nation, is back in the director’s chair for this movie. The film underwent some changes during production. Originally, Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 were planned as back-to-back films titled Dead Reckoning – Part One and Dead Reckoning – Part Two. After the mixed box office performance of the seventh film, the titles were adjusted, and Mission: Impossible 8 was renamed The Final Reckoning.
Is this really Tom Cruise’s last Mission: Impossible movie? It’s unclear, as no official confirmation has been made. However, Cruise is already looking ahead to new projects. He’s about to start work on a new film with Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu for Warner Bros., where he has a deal to produce and star in upcoming films.
Tom Cruise is returning alongside co-star Hayley Atwell, as well as franchise regulars Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and new cast members like Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, and Shea Whigham. The trailer also confirms Angela Bassett’s return, and other cast members include Esai Morales, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, and Greg Tarzan Davis.
Waiting for this movie
